Building and capturing worlds.

About Me

Hey, I’m CJ Mattia—a creator, educator, and all-around maker of things. I’ve spent the last two decades immersed in the art world, balancing a deeply honed skill in videography, photography, and design with a renaissance-like ability to work across a myriad of artistic practices. Whether I’m behind a camera, editing in a dark room, or assembling an installation with a scissor lift, my work is all about storytelling and creating worlds beyond the frame.

I earned both my BFA and MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC), where I developed a love for experimental and commercial production alike. Since then, I’ve worked across every stage of production—pre, post, and everything in between—on sets ranging from intimate indie projects to major commercial gigs for brands like Kraft and Lambda. I’ve freelanced, worked in-house, taught, and even hot-seated in courtrooms (yes, really). Right now, you can find me at the Hammer Museum and the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, ensuring exhibitions run smoothly and technology behaves itself.

No matter the medium, my work is about finding meaning in the details, bringing ideas to life, and making complex things feel effortless. If you need a creative mind who can think both artistically and technically, I’m your person. Let’s make something great.
